Employers: Need a Top-Notch Consultant? You Snooze, You Lose

We’ve been recruiting Consultants in a variety of industries, from Healthcare to Media & Entertainment, for many years. Take it from us when we say it is a candidate driven market right now. Julie Dodds, our CEO, says, “Time kills all deals. Lack of ability to get an offer approved, packaged, and presented reflects poorly on internal employer processes, and this may make the candidate question their seriousness and bureaucracy.”

If you’re hiring process is too slow, you are guaranteed to miss out on top talent. Most of the candidates we call aren’t necessarily looking for a position, but they are being inundated with phone calls and emails about opportunities, especially if they have in-demand skills. When they go on interviews, they are getting multiple offers. Sometimes their current employer will make a counter-offer in hopes they’ll stay put. Everyone knows the impact players can make your business. Shouldn’t your hiring process receive priority attention?

What are some other ways you can snag the best of the best?

  • Offer a competitive salary
  • Never leave a candidate hanging. Always follow up, especially if there is a delay
  • Give candidates a reason to come and work for you. What can you offer them that your competitors can’t?
  • Be enthusiastic and take an interest. No top-notch candidate wants to feel like they’re just a name on a piece of paper.

If you need help with your recruiting process, Velocity Talent is now offering Recruitment Process Outsourcing services. Read more about RPO on our website and please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you have.

What’s New?

Reform is keeping healthcare consultants in high demand. We’re seeing quite a bit of growth and opportunity in that industry. We’re also seeing a continued demand for ecommerce/digital strategy/social media consultants. Our recruiter, Jennifer Wright, says, “As retailers rely more and more on social media to shorten the purchase process and create consistent, somewhat customized messages to the consumer (again, end goal to shorten purchase path), they are looking for strategists to maximize these efforts.”

Candidates: Interview Tips

The recruiters at Velocity Talent know what impresses employers. We prepare candidates for interviews on a daily basis, giving out advice and tips specific to that candidate and the job opportunity they’re pursuing. In upcoming editions, we’ll share advice specific the fields we recruit for, like Consulting and Finance.

In the meantime, here are some general tips:

  • Do your research. Showing up to an interview unprepared is like taking a final exam without ever studying the course material. Chances are you’re not going to pass. It is not uncommon for a hiring manager to ask — why do you want to work here? Or, perhaps, what do you know about us? Don’t be that person who freezes like a deer in headlights. Know the company you’re interviewing with and what you can offer them before you walk in the door. Most companies have websites these days. Look them up and find out what they do. If you’re working with a recruiter at Velocity Talent, we’re happy to answer any questions you have about the company.
  • Appearance still matters. Dressing up for an interview should be common sense by now, but there’s still that guy who will show up in a Grateful Dead T-shirt and orange flip-flops. Don’t be that guy. While more companies are going ‘business casual’ these days and it seems almost everyone has a tattoo (or 14), it’s better to overdress than underdress. Keep your attire professional, neat, and clean. Stick with solid, neutral colors. And always be well-groomed. Your recruiter can and should fill you in on the dress code.
  • Check your attitude at the door. The interview starts as soon as you walk into the building. Make eye contact, smile, and treat everyone you meet with respect. These people are your potential co-workers and/or supervisors. You can’t fake confidence and passion, so don’t even try. Know your strengths, know your weaknesses, and own them. Interview for job opportunities you’re truly excited about and qualified for.
  • Pay attention. Always remember that you are interviewing the company, as well. Take note of the environment–do people look happy to be there? Are they laughing? Working quietly? Yelling? Small observations can tell you a lot about the company culture. Listen carefully to the hiring manager when they are describing the opportunity and their expectations. Many times what they say and how they say it will give you a good idea of what you’re walking into.
  • Convince them you’re the right person for the job, but stay honest. If you’ve done your research, and you’re paying attention, you’ll know pretty quickly whether or not an opportunity is right for you. If you really want the position, you need to give them a good reason to hire you over the competition. Don’t just list your strengths–tell them how your strengths can help them accomplish their specific goals. But keep it real. Don’t over-exaggerate your skills and never promise what you can’t deliver. If you are unsure about which skills to highlight, ask your recruiter. It’s our job to understand what an employer needs and why you’d be a great fit for that opportunity.
  • Ask questions. You’ve probably heard this a lot, but there’s a good reason. Asking questions is in your best interest. Not only does it make you seem interested and invested in the opportunity, you will gain valuable insight by asking the right questions. Find out what they’re expectations are, how they view the company culture, or what they like most about working there. Leave questions about pay, benefits, and vacation out of the equation until they bring it up or ask your recruiter beforehand.
  • Make sure they know you’re interested. Always close the interview by letting them know you are still very interested in the opportunity. This is where your enthusiasm really counts.

Employers: Recruitment Process Outsourcing — Why Consider It?

Let’s face it. Recruiting is time consuming, expensive, and it can overwhelm your HR staff and keep them from focusing on current business objectives. If you’re looking to streamline the recruiting process and cut costs, you should consider Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO). RPO is when you transfer some or all of your recruiting duties to an external provider.

Velocity Talent is happy to announce that we are now offering RPO services. We will sit down with you and work out a customized recruitment plan that fits your company’s needs and budget, resulting in higher productivity, lower cost. We can simply just screen resumes or we can handle first-line interviewing, reference checks, onboarding, and even payroll. Our goal is to make the recruiting process simple for your business and your HR staff, so you can focus on what matters most–your business.

Read more about RPO on our website and please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you have.
