Our Interview Series Part III: What To Do Post-Interview

Here’s something that doesn’t get covered much—what to do after the interview. So let’s say you did everything right. You followed our in-person interview suggestions and you’re pretty sure you nailed every question. Now what?

Now the waiting begins. And, as we all know, waiting for important news is never easy. The temptation to refresh your email or even check in with a recruiter or hiring manager can be strong. But at this point, patience is key. Every employer has their own hiring process and some are much slower than others.

Still, this isn’t the time to relax and put your feet up. There are still a few things you CAN do. And a few things you definitely want to avoid doing…

 DOs:

  • Write a personalized thank you note. Our recruiter, Jennifer Wright, says she’s taken a card with her to interviews. After the interview, she’ll write out a personalized note and drop the card off with the admin.  She’s also a fan of eCard thank you notes. Several sites offer free, professional thank you notes that are music and sound free. They get delivered right away and are easy to send en masse.
  • Get your references in order. Make sure your references know they’re a reference and that they’re okay with it. You want them to be prepared!
  • If you’re working with a recruiter, let us handle the communication.
  • Work with your recruiter on negotiations. What is most important to you? What are you willing to compromise?
  • Make sure to get any documents you may need in order

DONTs:

  • Never pester the employer with phone calls and emails. After the interview, write one thank you note. In that note, you can reiterate your interest in the position.
  • If you don’t get the job, do not write or call the employer and ask why. I’ve seen some advice out there encouraging candidates to inquire about why they didn’t get hired. Not the best idea, no matter how polite you are. It puts the employer in an awkward position and you come across as defensive, unable to simply take no for an answer. The best response to not getting the job is to move on. Chances are an employer who is truly the right fit for you will recognize that.
  • Don’t talk about your job search or an employer on social media. Employers can and do look at your Twitter or Facebook. And you probably don’t want them to know that this is the first interview you’ve gotten in six months. Or that you’ve been on thirty job interviews in the last month and not one place has hired you.

As always, if you have any questions you’d like us to answer, leave a comment!

Our Interview Series Part II: In-Person Interview

So you nailed the phone interview and scored yourself an in-person meeting. Congratulations! You’ve gotten your foot in the door. Buckle up, though. This is the hard part.

We’ve already given you the basics on how to have a successful interview. Do check them out as they’re a great place to start!

If we were to give you one piece of advice about interviewing, we’d say this—expect the unexpected. You can’t just walk in and expect the usual anymore. Tell me about yourself. What are your strengths? Employers are getting more creative. They’re finding better ways to predict not just if you can do the job. But how well.

One example is behavioral interviewing, where employers evaluate 13 predictive skills and behaviors to predict how good of a fit you’ll be. This is relatively new way of assessing candidates, but it’s a method more and more employers are using. They say behavioral interviewing is 55% predictive of future on-the-job behavior, while traditional interviewing weighs in at only 10%.

How is behavioral interviewing different? Well, for one thing, the questions are a lot more specific. And they demand specific answers.

How would you answer the following questions?

  • Tell me about a time when someone questioned your credibility in the industry. What was your reaction?
  • Tell me about a situation where your expertise made a significant difference. What was the outcome?
  • Describe a project in which others you were working with disagreed with your ideas. What did you do?
  • What was the most difficult ethical business decision you have had to make? What did you do? What was the outcome?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to work with other departments to solve a common problem.
  • How do you set goals for yourself? What specific goals have you achieved in the last six months?
  • Tell me about a time you were up against a competitor to win an account. What steps did you take to put yourself ahead?
  • Tell me about a time you had to make decisions without prior approval.

I bet you’re racking your brain, trying to think of answers. That is why preparation is so important. These questions are samples taken directly from the worksheet we send to all of our candidates before an interview. But there are well over 100 questions on that worksheet—in 13 different categories. Still think you’re prepared? This is where working with a recruiter can give you a competitive edge.

Here’s a list of DOs and DONTs we’ve compiled for you. These are just a few examples of the information we give to our candidates.

DOs:

  • Read our basic interview tips.
  • Make good eye contact. But don’t stare. Staring is creepy.
  • Maintain a high energy level. Sit up. Look alive.
  • Be yourself. You can tell when a person is being fake, right? So can the hiring manager.
  • Be direct. Ask direct questions and give direct answers.
  • Highlight your achievements. How did you make a difference?
  • Focus on the positive. Even when they ask you about weaknesses or a former supervisor you couldn’t stand. Put a positive spin on things by talking about what you learned from the experience and how it has made you better at your job.
  • Ask questions. Always have questions.
  • Follow up after the interview. Send a thank you note. Reiterate your interest. Let them know you’re still enthusiastic.

DONTs:

  • Give vague answers. Think about it. Would you hire someone who gave you vague answers?
  • Bring food or drinks. This isn’t a picnic. If you must have a drink, always stick with water.
  • Speak negatively about your former or current position. It might be tempting to talk about your inept boss or your crazy coworkers. After all, they’re the reason you’re leaving, right? Don’t. You’ll end up looking like the one who can’t play well with others.
  • Show off a portfolio or give a presentation unless you were specifically asked to do so.
  • Ramble. If you can’t focus on the question at hand now, how efficient are you going to be on the job?
  • Be stiff or boring. Hiring managers want to hire a real person, not Siri. Don’t read from a piece of paper. Don’t give canned responses.
  • Tell jokes. A little humor can go a long way in certain instances. But if you’re unsure or you have to question whether or not to say something…don’t.
  • Give the hiring manager a funny look their fashion choices. Maybe they’re wearing jeans. Or a fishnet shirt. Chances are they’re wearing it because they can. Go with it.
  • Get too comfortable. Some hiring managers can make you feel like you’re talking to a pal. They crack a joke. Ask you what your favorite album is. Always remember where you are and who you’re talking to. Keep your behavior professional.

Our Interview Series Part I: Phone Interview DOs & DON’Ts

We’ve given you some general interview tips before, but now we’re going to get even more specific. This month we’re going to talk about the phone interview, next month we’ll talk about the in-person interview, and in August we’ll cover what to do post-interview.

A phone interview may seem less intimidating than meeting an employer face-to-face. After all, they can’t see you. They won’t know if you’re in your pajamas, cooking a big dinner for the family, or sitting on a beach in Hawaii, right?

Wrong. Never underestimate how much background noise a phone can pick up.  If you can hear it, always assume they can. And never take a phone interview lightly. This is often a hiring manager’s first impression of you. This is where they decide if you’re even worth meeting. Do you want that first impression to involve your kids screaming in the background? Or—worse yet–that tourist on the beach who has had a few too many?

The most important thing to remember about a phone interview is to treat it like an in-person meeting. Imagine there’s a little camera in the wall, and the hiring manager can see everything you do.  Yes, they can see those bunny slippers too.

Keep in mind hiring managers don’t always schedule a phone interview ahead of time. Sometimes they’ll just call up and ask if you have a few minutes. This is where working with a recruiter is beneficial. We’ll schedule a time that works for you.

Here’s a handy list of Dos and Donts we’ve compiled from years of experience:

DOs

  • Prepare before you apply. Know the company. Know what they do. Know why you want to work for them. That way you’ll be ready, even if they call you up out of the blue.
  • Use a landline if you have the option. Less chance of breaking up or getting disconnected.
  • Pick a quiet place (preferably a room with a door) where you’re comfortable. You want to be completely free of distractions. Have someone watch your kids and pets, if necessary.
  • Keep your windows closed. You never know when your neighbor will bust out with the lawnmower.
  • Dress up. It may sound silly, but wearing professional clothes can help put you in a professional mindset—even if you’re sitting on your couch.
  • Speak clearly. It’s easy for words to become muffled on the phone, especially if you have the tendency to mumble. Try talking a bit slower than you normally would and pay attention to your enunciation.
  • Give succinct answers. Phone interviews, in most cases, are meant to be short. The hiring manager needs just enough information to decide whether or not to take the next step with you. Stay on topic. Don’t ramble.
  • Have a full glass of water handy. Nobody wants to hear you clear your throat again and again.
  • Be ready to take notes. Always have a pen and a pad or a computer ready, so you can take down any necessary information.
  • Have questions. You’ll want to have questions prepared for every interview you have, including the initial phone screening. However, it’s best to stick to just a couple questions at this stage in the process.

DONTs

  • Eat or use the bathroom. This should be common sense, but there are still people out there who do it! Remember–the sound of a flushing toilet is hard to miss.
  • Fill your water glass. Think of how filling your glass with water sounds. Now think how it might sound over a phone when you can’t see what the person is doing. Funny story: I was at home on a conference call and—not thinking—started filling my glass with water from my water cooler. Everyone got dead silent. And then it hit me…. I hope that doesn’t sound like… So, of course I mentioned I was just getting some water. And I was met with some very relieved laughter.
  • Exercise. A phone interview is not the time to get your workout in, okay? Just saying.
  • Share your life story. In fact, this is good advice for almost any situation.
  • Interrupt or dominate the conversation.  Sometimes it’s difficult to hold a conversation without visual cues. Listen carefully and wait a couple seconds to make sure the interviewer is done before diving in. Again, keep your answers short and to the point.
  • Take another call. Not only is this extremely rude and inconsiderate of the interviewer’s time, it sends the message that you’re not interested in the position.
  • Interview while at work. Do I really need to say why?
  • Interview and drive. This applies to just about any situation where your attention is divided, whether you’re at the grocery store or in an airport security line. If the phone interview wasn’t scheduled (meaning they just called you out of the blue), it is best to arrange a better time. If your interview was scheduled and you’re in this situation, you may want to get a common sense check-up.
  • Ask about pay or benefits. This is an old rule, but there are still some folks out there who don’t know it. It goes like this: Don’t talk pay until they do. No exceptions.
  • Make jokes or try to be humorous. If you’re not sure you can pull it off, don’t say it. This is true for any stage of the interview, but especially on the phone when you can’t see body language.

What’s New?

Velocity Talent conducted a poll this month, and the results were interesting (at least to me!) If you were offered a job opportunity—what matters most? The options were:

  • The pay
  • Culture/Work-life balance
  • Growth opportunities
  • Company reputation

The result? 63% of respondents said Culture/Work-life balance was the most important factor when deciding to take a job. Growth opportunities came in second at 27%, and company reputation mattered most to 9% of respondents. Pay was the last consideration on this list. Not at all what I expected.

Resume Writing 101: Give Us a Hook, Not a Novel

The topic of resumes comes up a lot in our weekly meetings, mostly what we wish candidates wouldn’t do. Some days, finding a well-written resume feels more like searching for a needle in a haystack.

So you’re an A-player with an MBA from a top school? A standout in your field? Prove it by writing a resume that makes us sit up and take notice. First impressions do count, regardless of how much experience you have. Here are a few tips from our recruiters:

  • Job requirements are listed for a reason—they’re requirements. When we say we want recent Big 4 consulting experience, we don’t mean 20 years ago. We mean no more than 5. It doesn’t matter how charming your cover letter is or how much you think you could do the job. You’re not the exception to the rule. If you don’t have the qualifications we’re looking for, you are wasting our time and yours.
  • Nobody wants to look at an 8-page functional resume. Job history is king. Keep it chronological and short—three pages, tops.
  • In most cases, we don’t want an autobiography (a resume that details every job you’ve had since high school). Focus on what you’ve been doing the last five years.
  • Here’s what we want to know: Your role, the goal of your project, and the outcome. That’s it. Don’t dance around the point or include unnecessary details. Just be clear and concise.
  • Don’t look like a job hopper when you’re not. If you’ve been with the same company for years, but you’ve had multiple roles, list your jobs by company and not by title or project. For example, let’s say you’ve had three different job titles at Company X over the last 10 years. List the company and the years you’ve worked there in the heading (i.e. Company X, 2002-present). Underneath that heading, list each of your roles and the years you worked in that role. (i.e. 2002-2004, Role Name). Use the same format if you’ve worked on multiple projects. Be sure to indent each role/project, so we know they are all with the same company.
  • Your MBA and twenty years of experience mean nothing if you can’t spell. Proofread your resume multiple times. Don’t just rely on Microsoft Word to check your spelling and grammar.
  • Leave out the fancy formatting. No tables. No charts. No boxes with cute borders. Trust us on this. But if you don’t, here’s a good explanation…

Don’t Believe the Numbers—A Word From Julie Dodds, CEO

There is still a lot of talk about high unemployment rates, but, Julie Dodds, CEO of Velocity Talent, has some good news. Unemployment is negligible for college graduates. In fact, we’re seeing a candidates’ market in Management Consulting right now.

Don’t let grass grow around your feet, employers. Top candidates are being hit with opportunities from every direction—social media, email, phone, etc. They’re usually not looking for a job; they don’t have to be. The opportunities are finding them.

The worst thing you can do is expect a candidate to jump through hoops for you. Respect that these candidates have competing demands in their lives. Insisting they hop on a plane the next day and fly across the country for an interview is not how you want to sell an opportunity. Neither is putting them through multiple rounds of interviews or taking weeks to make a decision. Respect their time. Remember the more transparent you are with them about the hiring process, the better the impression you’ll make.

If you need help with your recruiting process, Velocity Talent is now offering Recruitment Process Outsourcing services. Read more about RPO on our website and please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you have.

Employers: Need a Top-Notch Consultant? You Snooze, You Lose

We’ve been recruiting Consultants in a variety of industries, from Healthcare to Media & Entertainment, for many years. Take it from us when we say it is a candidate driven market right now. Julie Dodds, our CEO, says, “Time kills all deals. Lack of ability to get an offer approved, packaged, and presented reflects poorly on internal employer processes, and this may make the candidate question their seriousness and bureaucracy.”

If you’re hiring process is too slow, you are guaranteed to miss out on top talent. Most of the candidates we call aren’t necessarily looking for a position, but they are being inundated with phone calls and emails about opportunities, especially if they have in-demand skills. When they go on interviews, they are getting multiple offers. Sometimes their current employer will make a counter-offer in hopes they’ll stay put. Everyone knows the impact players can make your business. Shouldn’t your hiring process receive priority attention?

What are some other ways you can snag the best of the best?

  • Offer a competitive salary
  • Never leave a candidate hanging. Always follow up, especially if there is a delay
  • Give candidates a reason to come and work for you. What can you offer them that your competitors can’t?
  • Be enthusiastic and take an interest. No top-notch candidate wants to feel like they’re just a name on a piece of paper.

If you need help with your recruiting process, Velocity Talent is now offering Recruitment Process Outsourcing services. Read more about RPO on our website and please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you have.

Why Work With a Recruiter at Velocity Talent?

The recruiters at Velocity Talent are your employment consultants. We are with you every step of the way, including:

  • Introducing you to the opportunities that fit your needs and skills and handling the scheduling and coordination of interviews, saving you time.
  • Respecting your confidentiality. An employer will not be given your name unless you have given us permission to do so.
  • Making sure you’re thoroughly prepared for the interview.
  • Answering the questions you can’t ask employers, like concerns regarding compensation, vacation time, and culture.
  • Providing you with valuable insight about the company you wouldn’t be able to get on your own.
  • Acting as a mediator through the salary negotiation process, always trying for the highest compensation possible.
  • Following up with you after the job offer to help you with any questions or concerns that come up.

Here are what candidates are saying about our work:

In a time where many businesses are in the midst of re-orgs, and hiring contract / temporary staff, Velocity Talent is that rare gem that facilitates permanent hires, a win-win offer package, and is adept at matching talent and personality styles. I couldn’t be more pleased. -Sarah Mauer, Strategist

Jennifer contacted me about the perfect position – exactly what I wanted. Like everyone at Velocity, she was very professional and helpful throughout the entire search process. A big part of my successful placement was the coaching she provided before my first interview. I highly recommend Jennifer! Jim Hurst, Consultant
